Schools Program

E-mail Print PDF

This is a program designed for 6th-11th Grade high school students that helps students to use a social studies curriculum as a platform for developing independent thinking skills, exploring individual and class values and identifying opportunities for contribution to their school and community. The Schools Program shares many goals and characteristics of the Young Adult Program, but has two important distinguishing features:

  • the program is more academically oriented and aims to re-enforce teacher efforts to instruct core curriculum content in social studies
  • the program can be adapted as required to address specific conduct issues that may arise within a class or within a group of students (in cases where teachers fear that punishment will only re-enforce the identity of a group of students as "trouble-makers", this program provides pathways for students to find positive identities for themselves)

The Schools program is currently being piloted in a high school in Guatemala.
